Breastfeeding

Lactation and Newborn Care

Breastfeeding is the best start you can give your baby.  Numerous studies have demonstrated the many benefits for the nursing mother, child, and family.  While breastfeeding is “natural”, there may be challenges that arise as you get started, or at various stages of your nursing baby’s life.  For that reason, we offer the support and guidance of a board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) as part of your routine newborn and baby care visits.  Our “Newborn Team”, consisting of our Pediatric Nurse Practitioners- Hannah Harris, and Stacey Shoman, as well as a lactation consultant, Mindy Wajcman, provide a supportive and personalized approach to assisting you with your newborn care and feeding concerns.
Please call our main number 913-906-0900 if you would like to schedule an appointment with our lactation consultant, or newborn team or if you have any questions about your baby.

Breastfeeding Support Group

Our office holds a Breastfeeding Support Group the first and third Wednesday of each month from 5:30-6:30 in our waiting room.  Our support group is the only breastfeeding support group that is offered in the evening in Johnson County.  As most hospital based support groups are held in the daytime, this allows working mothers or with children at home to participate.  These groups are facilitated by the lactation consultant for those with breastfeeding questions, and provides an opportunity for mothers to weigh their babies.  Just as importantly, mothers in the group enjoy supporting, sharing and encouraging each other in their breastfeeding experiences. You do not have to be a patient of our office to attend these free meetings.

Prenatal Visits

Our office offers prenatal visits at no charge for parents to come in and meet the physician of their choice, as well as a member of our “Newborn Team”.  During these visits we discuss such things as hospital follow -up of the newborn, office hours and after hours care, frequency of exams, access to lactation support, general baby care, immunizations, and any other questions new parents may have.  Please call our main office number 913-906-0900 if you would like to schedule a prenatal appointment.
