Flu Season

Among the many viruses we see causing respiratory illness right now, the influenza virus (commonly called "the flu") can be particularly severe. Infection with the influenza virus causes a sudden onset of fever, chills, dry cough, and muscle aches. Other symptoms include headache, fatigue, sore throat, and nasal congestion.  Some children are at increased risk of more serious illness from influenza, because of conditions such as diabetes, asthma, immunity problems, or being treated with immune-suppressing medications.  They are especially vulnerable to complications and should get vaccinated as soon as possible.

We’re not seeing much influenza activity yet, but flu season typically starts picking up in November. Now is a good time to prepare, especially since the flu can cause more severe illness than many other respiratory viruses. This year, we will be administering the Flucelvax® flu vaccine.  Flucelvax is a cell-based influenza vaccine, which means it is not manufactured using chicken eggs. Studies have shown that this type of vaccine may offer improved effectiveness.  We believe Flucelvax represents a superior option with the potential to help prevent more flu infections this season.
